Three Days Celebrating Books in historic Chestertown on the Eastern Shore of Maryland

The Chestertown Book Festival begins its three-day event with a 4:30 PM poetry reading by Washington College Professor James Allen Hall. Hall is the author of Now You’re the Enemy: Poems published by the University of Arkansas Press. This event will take place at the Rose O’Neill Literary House and is sponsored by The Sophie Kerr Committee at Washington College.

 

 

 

 

Following this event at 6:00 PM will be a reading and performance by Stephen Wade. Wade will talk about “songcatching” and about researching the stories of creation and content of famous folk songs. His book, The Beautiful Music All Around Us, is published by the University of Illinois Press, and the Grammy nominated companion CD is produced by Smithsonian Folkways Records. This event will take place at Decker Theatre in the Gibson Center for the Arts and is Sponsored by the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience and The Washington College Concert Series.

At 7 PM Friday, September 20 at the Bookplate downtown Chestertown, Jonathan Segal, Senior Editor at Alfred A. Knopf will talk about writing and publishing with Paul Hendrickson, author of Hemingway’s Boat. Segal worked closely with Hendrickson on the book, which is dedicated to the editor. The evening promises to be an insightful glimpse into the dynamics of high-level publishing.

From 10 AM – 4 PM, more than 30 authors and bookmakers will exhibit their books and reviews at the Emmanuel Church, 101 North Cross St., for the Book Festival Exhibition. Free Admission. Click here for a full list of our 2013 Bookfair Exhibitors.

During the Festival on Saturday, four guest authors will give readings to the public.

The Children’s Reading in the morning will feature a 10 AM reading by Marcy Dunn Ramsey, a local writer and artist who in addition to writing her own book Rosie’s Posie’s, has illustrated dozens of books, from all branches of publishing. At 11 AM, the creators of Idiots Books and the new children’s publication, Bobbledy Books, Robbi Behr and Matthew Swanson, will follow up with a reading at the Bookplate, 112 S Cross Street. Directions to Bookplate.

Saturday afternoon will see a pair of authors take the stage at the Emmanuel Church. At 1 PM, author A.S. King, winner of the 2013 LA Times for her book Ask the Passengers will read from her work.

 

 

 

 

At 3 PM, Joe Wallace, author of Diamond Ruby and a long time nonfiction writer, will close out the festival.

 

 

 

 

 

The Chestertown Book Festival is sponsored by the Friends of the Kent County Public Library, The Rose O’Neill Literary House, The Sophie Kerr Committee, the C.V. Starr Center for the American Experience, Chester River Press, Chesapeake Bank & Trust, and the Kent County Arts Council.
