The little one-room colored-school house in Worton Point is in need of repair.
As many of you know, this building, built in 1890 as part of the St. George United Methodist Church community, served first as the school, then as a hall, then as the actual Church, until the current modern structure was completed, then as a School-House Museum, then back to a hall. At this point, its status as a Community Hall is compromised as the chimney needs repointing for everyone’s safety.
Irene Moore’s involvement with this small building goes back to the 1940’s when she attended the school. As an adult she has served on the vestry of the church, and for over 40 years has led the remarkable acapella gospel group, the New Gospelites. It is she who is spearheading an effort to stabilize the building.
Kent County Arts Council is helping with the effort to raise $1,000 for the necessary repair. It is hoped that it will be done in time for the annual St. George Day, August 29, 2015. KCAC and the Arts Community as a whole are grateful to Irene Moore for her beautiful voice, her musical talent and her generosity in sharing it whenever it is requested.
It will be to honor her that tax deductible donations (of any amount) can be made to KCAC in her name either by check, or by PayPal.
