2014 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast

mlkDr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast will be held on at Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Chesapeake Room of the Rock Hall Fire Hall. Breakfast will be served between 7:00 am & 8:00 am and the program follows.

The theme of this event is Moving Forward From Dream to Reality, with Keynote Speaker Dr. Joseph E. Morse, a resident of Salisbury, Maryland who is the Chief Executive Officer at Maryland Capital Enterprises, Inc and Publisher/Editor of Delmarva African American Pride magazine.

Superintendent of Kent County Public Schools, Dr. Karen Couch, will host as EMCEE.

The musical highlights will be performances by Keith Wharton’s Brigade of Blue Jazz Group from Kent County High School, the Sensational Stars and the New Gospelites. Awards will be made to Faye Everett of Millington for the annual Humanitarian Award, and the Humanitarian Award for Youth will be given to Crishelle Copper.  The 9th annual Vincent Hynson Youth Awards will be presented to Isaiah Hackett, 6th Grade, Tiyana Goldsborough 7th Grade, and Vincent Collins 8th Grade

Tickets are $10  at Corner Print Shop, Lemon Leaf Restaurant, & Music Life in Chestertown; Java Rock in Rock Hall; Otwells and Galena Pizzeria in Galena or At The Door.

Dr. Joseph E. Morse Dr. Joseph E. Morse has been selected to be the Keynote Speaker for the Kent County celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  , January 20, 2014.   A resident of Salisbury, Maryland, Dr. Morse is the Chief Executive Officer at Maryland Capital Enterprises, Inc. (MCE) a non-profit micro-lender serving our area with loans and other microenterprise development programs for the last twelve years.  He is one of the founders of MCE and has over 40 years of experience in community development; 30 in Maryland.  He is a graduate of Howard University with Bachelor Degree in Architecture, Master Degree in City Planning, and Juris Doctorate Degree in Law.  An entrepreneur, he has been Publisher/Editor of Delmarva African American Pride magazine for 12 years and Executive Director of Delmarva Rural Community Development Corp. for over 20 years.  Dr. Morse has received numerous recognitions including being inducted into Sigma Beta Delta National Business Honor Society and several Who’s Whos.  He is a veteran of the US Air Force and a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2014  HUMANITARIAN Award, which is presented each year at the Breakfast Celebration is awarded to an individual who has made significant contributions to the quality of life in Kent County.

This year the honor goes to Faye Everett of Millington.  Her leadership and hard work creating Hope Fellowship has helped feed those in need in upper Kent County.  She and her team cook wonderful homemade meals that are sent out to the sick and shut-in from Sudlersville to Galena, with the number served reaching 200 a week.  She is also a force in helping with the Back Pack program for Millington Elementary School which provides food for children over the weekends when they are not able to access school meals.  She also heads up a free Thanksgiving Day dinner held at Asbury Church in Millington.  Her work and devotion to issues of hunger and nutrition are very much appreciated by the entire Kent County community.

A newly created honor, The Humanitarian Youth Award, will be presented to Crishelle Copper, a senior at Kent County High School.  Devoted to school activities as well as academics, she also contributes to her community with activities at nursing homes, shelters and works to improve the environment.  A varsity athlete she plays basketball, volleyball and tennis, and is an alto saxophone player in the marching and concert bands. She recently won the title 2013 Homecoming Queen.

Vincent Hynson Memorial Award goes to Middle School students who exemplify the values and characteristics that were reflected in Vincent Hynson’s life: involvement and contributions in activities both at school and throughout the community. The selections are made by faculty and staff of Kent County Middle School.  The 2014 recipients are Isaiah Hackett, 6th Grade, Tiyana Goldsborough 7th Grade, and Vincent Collins 8th Grade.
